Siemens Safety Evaluation Tool now also offline avaliable!

Siemens has recently (June 2020) integrated its Safety Evaluation Tool (SET) into the Siemens TIA Selection Tool. With the SET, the Performance Level (PL) or the Safety Integrity Level (SIL) can be calculated off-line and in the cloud.

With the TIA Selection Tool you can easily select the products required for a machine or production line without extensive knowledge of the Siemens product portfolio. Configure a complete project with just a few mouse clicks - without manual, without special knowledge. The realized hardware configuration can be exported to the TIA Portal and/or other systems. The TIA Selection Tool can be used as a cloud version, but can also be downloaded as a desktop version. In the cloud version it is possible to set up the project configuration with multiple people in a team.

Calculation PL/SIL

After selecting the hardware components of a control safety function, the designer must also demonstrate that the realised safety function meets the required safety level. The well-known Siemens Safety Evaluation Tool (SET) can be used for this purpose. The SET can be used to calculate the Performance Level (PL) for machine control safety functions according to EN-ISO 13849-1:2016 or the Safety Integrity Level (SIL) according to EN-IEC 62061:2015.

One software platform

The advantage of the integration of the SET into the Siemens TIA Selection Tool is that now everything is done in one software platform. So when you are selecting the products for your production line and the safety components, you can also model the safety functions and directly calculate the PL and/or SIL level. In addition, due to the periodic updates of the TIA Selection Tool, the Safety Evaluation will now automatically be included in this update process.

Products from other suppliers

In addition to Siemens safety products, it is also possible to add products from other suppliers to the TIA Selection Tool. Nowadays almost every supplier of (safety) components delivers the product specifications according to the VDMA 66413 format. The VDMA is the German Fachverband Verfahrenstechnische Maschinen und Apparate (Fachverband Verfahrenstechnische Maschinen und Apparate), which several years ago defined the data format (the VDMA 66413 library) for components in safety functions, see the link: https://ea.vdma.org/66413bibo. This allows the specifications of components from other manufacturers to be imported into the TIA Selection Tool and used in the calculation of the Safety Evaluation. The VDMA library of Siemens safety components and systems is already included as standard in the TIA Selection Tool.

Advantages of the tool

The major advantage of integrating the Safety Evaluation into the TIA Selection Tool is that all information is available in one platform. For the time being, the first release of the Safety Evaluation will only be available in the offline version of the TIA Selection Tool (Beta version, june 2020). Later, the online version will also become available.
Another advantage is that with the OFF-line TIA Selection Tool the calculations can now also be performed in locations where there is no internet access available.
